Two new pieces from the “HEART THROB” Pop Icon collection at The Royal Society of British Artists’ annual exhibition at The Mall Galleries, London went on show today for the first time. “Night & Day” (Frank Sinatra) and “Mod Rock” (The Who), created by the RBA artist and sculptor Guy Portelli, will be part of one of the largest exhibitions on the Pop Icon theme to date.
TV ‘Dragons’ James Caan, Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis joined Guy Portelli who is creating a collection of 18 iconic sculptures which will make up his forthcoming solo exhibition in June, also at the Mall Galleries.
Guy Portelli took his Pop Icon project to the BBC TV Dragons’ Den in a bid to raise the money and profile of a collection he had been working on for 34 years. The project captured the imagination of the ‘Dragons’ as well as the viewers. Guy Portelli said, “I walked away with the support of three Dragons and more money than I originally asked for, which was really helpful.”
The artist’s project has grown in concept and ambition, and is set to become the biggest exhibition on the theme of the Pop Icon staged in the UK.
Guy Portelli’s June solo exhibition of sculptures will be shown alongside the work of Sir Peter Blake RA , Miles Davies, Jay Blakesberg, Jude Calvert Toulmin, Richard Evans, Deborah Feingold, Karl Ferris, James Gilham, Bill Green, Sebastian Kruger, John Lennon, Dennis Morris, Chris Myers, Terry O'Neill, Terry Pastor, Celia Philo, Aubrey Powell, Jamie Reid, Storm Thorgerson, Nick Tidnam, Albert Watson & Kevin Westenberg.
